Members

Membership in Pike Lake Neighbors, Inc. is open to any individual that (a) subscribes to the purposes of the Organization, and (b) owns or leases property within one mile of Pike Lake, or (c) resides on or within one mile of Pike Lake at least one month each year, or (d) is the spouse, adult child, parent, sibling, or adult grandchild of an individual described in (b) or (c).

Purpose

As defined in our Constitution and Bylaws, “The purpose of the Organization is to preserve and protect Pike Lake and adjoining portions of the Turtle River in Iron County Wisconsin from undesirable invasive species, and to protect and enhance the environment, ecology, water quality, and fishery of Pike Lake, as a public recreational facility for today and for future generations.”

Note that this organization is an advocate for the health of the lake and river itself, not an advocate for or representative of shoreland owners.

Our prime priority is to control the Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Curly Leaf Pondweed (CLP) in Pike Lake and the rest of the Turtle River watershed.

Issues such as land use and boating safety are not in the scope of this organization, and the organization has no powers of regulation or enforcement of any kind.

Annual Meeting

The board of directors has established that the Annual Members Meeting of Pike Lake Neighbors Inc. in 2022 and beyond shall regularly be held on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend.

Dues

Your dues are being used to build a working fund that can be used to pay operating costs and expenses, primarily for equipment and professional help to monitor and control Curly Leaf Pondweed in the lake and river. We currently have no active grant program, but typically a DNR grant requires 25% matching funds or in-kind contributions.

Dues are currently set by a vote of the membership at $20 per person per calendar year.  We will send an email reminder at the beginning of the year, and dues must be paid before the annual membership meeting to vote in the meeting and to continue to be considered a member.  It is helpful to have dues payments early in the year, so that we have funds to pay seasonal expenses.

Participation

We need your support and active participation to be successful.

  • Dues.
  • Awareness, Advocacy, Moral Support.  Learn how to identify CLP and talk with others about CLP and our efforts.
  • Pulling Curly Leaf Pondweed.  Join volunteer CLP pulling crews.  Not everyone has the ability or time to do this often, but up to this point, this burden is borne by only a few people.  We need more help.  Plus, these activities are a great way to have fun in the water.  All are welcome, member or not. Try to join at least one day a year.
  • Clear your Lakeshore. Monitor your own lakeshore and report and pull any CLP you find.
  • Monitoring.  As you fish, boat, and swim, actively look for infestations and report them.
  • Clean Boats and Trailers.  Be especially careful to not spread CLP and other Invasive Species.  Check your boats and trailers carefully for vegetation every time you enter or leave Pike Lake or any other waterway.
  • Report volunteer time.
