Letter to Pike Lake Property Owners & Concerned Parties
February 29, 2024
This communication is intended to bring you up to speed on the Curly Leaf Pondweed issue that we face not only on Pike Lake, but much of the adjacent Turtle River Watershed.
In 2011, CLP was detected in Rice Lake. Since that time concerted efforts have been undertaken with the help of Iron County Land and Water Conservation Department to try and control the spread of this invasive vegetation. Survey & CLP manual pulling (hand removal efforts) have been somewhat successful in location and removal of the CLP. We have had members of the Pike Lake Neighbors and other upstream and downstream Lake Organizations lead and assist in these efforts. In 2024, we will continue these efforts and ask that you consider assisting in these enhanced and focused efforts.
Here you will find a summary of the locations of CLP identified in Pike Lake and the Turtle River and a 2024 control plan as laid forth in a document prepared by Zach Wilson of the Iron County L&WC Department. Turtle River,Pike,Rice Lake CLP Action Plan 2024
What I am asking or requesting is that all Pike Lake Residents make a greater effort in participating in the Pike Lakes Neighbors Association, its work efforts, becoming a dues paying member and making a difference in our battle against Curly Leaf Pondweed.
There are 9 planned CLP pull event dates in 2024 coordinated by the ICL&WC Department assisted by Pike Lake and Turtle River Watershed participants. Additionally the Pike Lakes Neighbors will hold a CLP Identification Presentation on July 6, 2024, followed by a morning/afternoon CLP pull effort (More will follow on this day’s activities). Quite simply, we need every hand on deck and a greater level of effort from all parties to be successful in this endeavor.
Please visit the Pike Lakes Neighbors website pikelakeneighbors.org for additional information on current, past and future work efforts.
I would like to thank all of you for your consideration of the points brought forth in this communication. If you have any questions or desire additional information on our association, please do not hesitate to contact me at any time.
Sincerely, Steve Kubacki Pike Lakes Neighbors – President (920)609-5492
